Industry jargon not your thing? Our glossary will enlighten you!
As part of a test shoot, professional pictures are taken for the sedcard and the model book. This is not a specific order from a client, but is purely in the model's own interest. A test shoot is particularly important for newcomers. They need high-quality photos to draw attention to themselves in the model scene.
There are two different types of test shoots: paid and unpaid. Both variants have advantages for the model, photographer and - if available - stylist.
Paid test shoot: The rather rare variant. For these so-called "paid shoots", the model pays the photographer and the stylist (if their services are required). The resulting pictures are then exclusively available to the model, the photographer has no exploitation rights.
Unpaid test shoot: Occurs significantly more often than the paid option. All parties work free of charge on the basis of a TFP (Time for Picture) agreement. The resulting pictures serve as "payment". The model receives material for her sedcard and model portfolio, while the photographer (and stylist) can use the photos on their website or for their social media presence.
A TFP agreement usually only covers the exploitation rights with regard to self-promotion. Commercial exploitation is not yet permitted and requires a separate agreement.
A test shoot is particularly important at the start of a model's career. A good sedcard or a good model book makes it easier to enter the fashion industry. However, a first test shoot is not enough. The sedcard and model portfolio should always be up to date, which is why new test shoots need to be carried out from time to time. This allows the model to document her progress or record major visual changes.

To ensure that a test shoot delivers satisfactory results for everyone involved, the following points should be considered and discussed in advance:
Diversity: Use the test shoot to show as many sides of yourself as possible. Shoot for the fashion, commercial and beauty sectors. Try out different poses and styling. Clients are usually looking for particularly versatile models.
Type of contract: Clarify with the photographer in advance whether it is a paid or unpaid test shoot.
Location: Choose a location together that emphasizes your versatility.
Styling: Decide whether you as the model will take care of the styling yourself or whether the photographer will take a partner with them.
A meeting between the model and photographer in advance is always helpful. Important details can always be clarified better in a direct conversation than in writing. Both sides quickly realize whether the chemistry between them is right.
