Malte is empathetic, understanding, a bit spacey, and sometimes noncommittal. The 28-year-old has a very close and loving relationship with his grandmother Martha and is very attached to her. At the same time, he’s someone who’s quick to make grand statements without always being aware of what they actually mean—which is why his family sometimes gets the impression that he’s all talk and no action. However, he never means any harm; he often acts spontaneously based on his feelings and only thinks about the consequences later.
When Martha tells him early on that she no longer wants to live, Malte is the first person who can truly understand her perspective. Out of love, helplessness, and the desire to be there for her, he promises her that he’ll “go to Switzerland with her if nothing else works out.” For him, at that moment, it’s above all an emotional promise. He isn’t even aware for a long time that Martha takes his words very seriously, remembers them for years, and relies on them.
Despite his sometimes noncommittal nature, his understanding of Martha remains. He is able to accept sooner than the others that she can love her family, experience beautiful moments, and still decide for herself that her life is fulfilling. Precisely for this reason, he later becomes an important source of support for his mother, Anke, when she doubts whether it is right to let Martha go.
