Job description

The Hessisches Landestheater Marburg (GmbH) is supported by the state of Hesse and the university city of Marburg and is one of six publicly subsidized theater companies in Hesse. With 76 permanent employees, including an ensemble of 18 actors and its own trades in the areas of costumes, make-up, props, carpentry, metalwork and painting, the HLTM has four permanent venues and has the task of bringing theater to the area (especially in Hesse, but also throughout Germany).

The HLTM plays around 250 to 300 performances a year, of which up to 110 are currently guest performances. Since the 2018/2019 season, the HLTM has been managed by two artistic directors, the "Marburg model". One focus of the HLTM is diverse and sophisticated theater for people from the age of three to old age. Classics, contemporary drama, musical theater productions and novel adaptations, among others, make up the varied repertoire. An annual highlight is the Hessian Children's and Youth Theatre Week under the name "KUSS" with numerous guest performances from Hesse, Germany and Europe.

The Hessian State Theatre Marburg is looking for a Head of Lighting for the 2026/2027 season, or from December 1, 2026 at the latest.

Your tasks include: 

  • Management of work areas

  • Involvement in the planning and installation of facilities and workplaces

  • Procurement of work equipment and maintenance of inventory lists

  • Designing the duty roster for the lighting department

  • Transferring tasks to employees, taking artistic, technical and economic aspects into account, technical and economic aspects to employees according to their qualifications and suitability

  • Training and instructing employees

  • Promoting the professional development of employees

  • Ensuring and monitoring the production process and repertoire operation with regard to technical and artistic requirements

  • Controlling and monitoring the development of costs by deploying staff in line with requirements and deadlines and in an economical manner

  • and timely as well as economical deployment of personnel and resources

  • Long-term and medium-term planning and management of the lighting department's financial resources

  • Calculating the lighting equipment for productions

  • Developing new working methods and workflows

  • Advising and supporting external lighting designers in technical Lighting designers in the technical implementation of lighting concepts

  • Developing lighting concepts for the company's productions

  • Participating in rehearsals as part of the creation of a lighting concept

  • Working in all areas of the lighting department, z.E.g. EPH, Schauspielhaus am Schwanhof, rehearsal stages, external rehearsal stages and venues, etc.

  • Drawing up work documents and construction plans for the lighting equipment

  • Monitoring the lighting systems and equipment with regard to quality and safety requirements

  • Supervising performances in all HLTM venues and guest venues

  • Willingness to undergo continuous training and further education in new lighting technologies

  • Performing and monitoring the necessary measures in accordance with VDE standards, occupational health and safety, accident prevention, fire protection and compliance with the provisions of the Assembly Venue Ordinance

  • Involvement in the future-oriented equipment and digitalization of the theatre

Role / Requirements profile

We are looking for a competent person with the appropriate qualifications and the will to lead a team, as well as the appropriate sensitivity for artistic processes and sufficient pragmatism. You will lead a team of 4-6 people and work closely with your supervisor, the technical director, and the artistic directors, as well as with changing artistic teams; the position also requires direct cooperation with the stage technology, sound and video departments, workshops, artistic departments and the theater education department
