Job description
Murat, aka Kanake, is set in Berlin in the 1990s.
Umut is a Turkish boy about ten years old who is the center of attention at a “circumcision ceremony” in Kreuzberg. He is a typical kid from the neighborhood—curious, excited, and proud of his role in the ceremony. Umut is the son of Döndü, a guest worker, and no longer has a father at home. He seeks out male role models and finds them above all in Atilla, whom he admires as a big brother and protector.
Umut exemplifies the younger generation of migrant children who grow up straddling cultures, feel the weight of family and societal expectations, and seek guidance. His character brings childlike innocence, hope, and a longing for belonging to the story.
