Thinking is like a drug to him - but not his only one: his cocaine addiction is something Watson tries to keep under control. Feelings and emotions are not for him, as they distract him from his work, yet he is not averse to women and sometimes falls for them. Talks faster than others can think, often coming across as cool and lacking empathy.
After 3 years of traveling, back in London in 1894 to finally catch the last villain of Moriarty's gang. Something about the story and the marquise's letter makes him suspicious; he suspects Moriarty is behind it, even though he should be dead. So he sends Watson ahead and travels incognito himself to gather as much information as possible.
